My Grandpa's car
My Grandfather was James A. Thornton of Beloit, Wisconsin.
My Grandpa owned his own garage/service station that sold Shell gasoline in Beloit, WI. He had raced at various dirt tracks around the area including the early years of stock car racing. He and a fellow mechanic had built this very car themselves by hand. We are currently still trying to find what the car started out as. The style of this custom made sports car resembled a Jaguar XK120, but this car was finished and already sold before the XK debut in 1948. A close look at the car shows that there are no doors and no trunk. The hood scoop looks way ahead of its time. When he finished it, they drove it to the 1948 Indianapolis 500. At this event a gentleman had approached my grandfather about his car. A deal was made; my grandfather drove the car home and waited for the new owner to pick the car up. We are still searching for some history about it. If you think you have any info, please ring me up!
